The opposition’s policy on fuel efficiency standards is not only unhelpful, it ignores Australian consumers.

The Coalition is right: Australians do love their cars, particularly utes. A walk through any building site car park would demonstrate that, as did last month’sIt should be no surprise, then, that Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has responded to Labor’s proposed fuel efficiency standards by ramping up fears over how they could lead to a surge in new car prices. And every scare campaign needs a catchy slogan – this time it’s the “ute tax”.

Such claims sidestep the reality that Australia, with no emissions standards, has become a dumping ground for less efficient cars and has a dearth of options if you want to opt for an electric car.have access to fewer than 100 of the more than 500 globally available all-electric and plug-in hybrid models. Of the 10 most fuel-efficient cars available in Europe, seven are not available in Australia, while 40 of the 50 most fuel-efficient cars available in Germany cannot be bought here.

Even if that is stretching the truth, there is little doubt that greater access to more efficient cars will get Australia to where it needs to be on emissions faster.
