Roi Mandel, Director of Research at MyHeritage, which colourised the photos, said: "Once we saw this collection, we knew we had to do something with it.2 of 17It was called the Australian Comforts Fund carnival, and the picture was taken between 1940 and 1946.The American colony was once a commune-style dwelling, but is now a luxury hotel.

Mr Mandel said: "The American Colony Photo Department's collection is a marvellous and extraordinary documentation of life in the Middle East in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "The Australian presence in the area was a focus of interest for the department's photographers who documented their military activities in the First World War and the life that followed."It could almost be an Aussie surf carnival - but this was in Tel Aviv in October, 1941."For us it was a great experience because suddenly characters were pulled out and seen within the situation," he said.
