Nationals MP Keith Pitt has opened up about his abrupt exit from politics and how an “unexpected opportunity” fell into his lap, while revealing disagreements with his party’s leadership filled his “frustration bucket”.
Nationals MP Keith Pitt has opened up about his abrupt exit from politics as policy disagreements within his party began to overfill his"frustration bucket".
“I'm wishing Peter Dutton all the best in 2025, but I've got a very unexpected opportunity. My wife has asked me every week since I started why am I still doing this? And I've finally got to the point where I've said, ‘Well, actually it's time to let someone else have a go’,” he told Sky News Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert.
“Canberra is a tough place and there's lots of times where you disagree and that's a good thing because in my view you get better policies when you push and prod and poke and move things around until you get the absolute best possible outcome.”Mr Pitt refused to elaborate on his internal feuding with Nationals Leader David Littleproud after calling on him to “stand up and be strong”.
“It is hundreds of billions of dollars that has to be paid for at a time where a bag of grated cheese is $10… It can be delayed. You've got till 2050,” he said. Earlier on Friday, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton addressed Mr Pitt’s exit from politics on the Today show and said the former resources minister was an “incredibly smart guy”. “He's made an enormous contribution as a minister and as a member for Hinkler in Bundaberg. He's a well-respected local member and I think he's looking forward to the next stage of his career.”
