Australia has six universities in the world’s top 100 again, but pandemic-era revenue cuts are hitting financial viability.
The University of Melbourne has maintained its top spot among Australian universities.Monash, the second highest-ranked institution, fell four places to 58, while the University of Queensland fell five places to 77.’s fall from grace is the most notable. ANU went backwards six places on last year, but has dropped from 45th best university in the world to 73rd over the course of a decade.
“Australian universities’ finances are struggling and added to this mix is inflation and flat domestic demand, leaving them more vulnerable than before COVID,” the analysis said. “I understand that many in the sector are very worried about forthcoming new international caps which may further erode income for some top institutions, as well as diminish Australia’s reputation as an open and internationally facing sector,” Mr Baty said.Duncan Maskell, Melbourne’s vice chancellor, said the university had achieved near-perfect scores in more than half of the performance indicators, including research excellence, research influence, industry and international indicators.
