The Titans offered David Fifita the largest contract in the club's history, but it wasn't enough to lure the star away from the Broncos | SMHsport
The Gold Coast Titans have reportedly offered one of the biggest contracts in rugby league history, a revised $1.25m deal, to entice David Fifita to the club, hours after he rejected a $1.1m deal.
The off-contract Brisbane back-rower called the Titans on Wednesday night to tell them they had missed out but it appears they won't take no for an answer. The reported new offer comes after Fifita on Wednesday told the Broncos he would remain at the club next season, a day after informing them he was leaving.Getty Images
After eight months of negotiations, Fifita is yet to sign a contract. He had been agitating for another $50,000 from the Broncos for next year. The Broncos have offered him close to $700,000. The 20-year-old phoned Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold yesterday to inform him he was staying. Fifita wants to sign only a one-year deal so he can sever ties with manager Steve Deacon at the end of his agency contract next year.Fifita phoned Broncos recruitment manager Peter Nolan on Tuesday to notify the club he was leaving. The Broncos didn’t blink, insisting the $700,000 deal was a take-it-or-leave-it offer. The Titans didn’t receive a call saying he was coming.
The Broncos have salary cap limitations prohibiting them from increasing their offer, but the club is also mindful of paying too much for a back-rower. The club has a lot of money tied up in its forward pack, with Payne Haas, Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai jnr some of the highest paid big men in the game.
