Ledecky, a five-time gold medallist and the defending champion in the 400 free, won the third heat with a time of 4:00.45 and was the fastest overall. Titmus will be in lane 3 for the final with Ledecky in lane 4.
McKeown threatened to beat her own world mark but settled for a new Olympic record, winning the final heat with a time of 57.88 - the record being broken twice in the earlier heats. In the final event of the night’s heats, Kyle Chalmers was called up into the men’s 4x100 freestyle team and brought them home strongly to finish second behind the US , with only Italy going faster in the previous heat.
