The family of 19-year-old man Nicholas Roma Tipungwuti, who died of a stroke in 2022, is suing the NT government for what they say was negligent care causing his preventable death.
Ralda Roma, the mother of Nicholas Roma Tipungwuti, says she lost her "best friend" when her son died.Nicholas Roma Tipungwuti died of a stroke in May 2022 after he presented to Royal Darwin Hospital and waited over 12 hours to be transported to Royal Adelaide Hospital.
During a trip to the shops in Darwin's outer suburbs on May 10, 2022, Ms Roma's son, Nicholas Roma Tipungwuti, began having a medical episode."I felt this thump in the back of my chair like somebody was kicking me," Ms Roma said."And I turned the rear-view mirror down to have a look at him. What happened over the next four days, while the young navy recruit was in the care of NT Health, is now the subject of legal action being brought by Ms Roma.
Nicholas, who lived on the Tiwi Islands, had a history of rheumatic heart disease and was overdue for a penicillin injection. "Mr Roma was sent on the next available jet which left Royal Darwin Hospital at around 11.30am on May 11, 2022."A letter from Shine Lawyers on behalf of Ms Roma says Nicholas was not admitted to Royal Adelaide Hospital until 9:53pm on May 11.
NT Health has a contract with aeromedical retrieval service CareFlight for emergency transport in the Top End.
