Kitted out with torches, gloves and buckets, hundreds of 'toad busters' will go on the hunt for a dangerous invader across northern Australia this week.
With an estimated 200 million cane toads in Australia today, the pest poses a deadly threat to native fauna and impacts ecosystems.
“We love the Top End, we love all the wild and wonderful creatures at night-time, it's a whole different world at night.” Hundreds of toads have been caught on busts like this in the past, but the first one for the season on Wednesday night resulted in a smaller haul.“Sometimes we get a lot, and sometimes they're not around.”
Watergum invasive species manager Kelsi Taylor said cane toads were now spreading at a rate of 50 kilometres per year, partly from an increase of wet and warm weather but also due to a phenomenon dubbed ‘the Olympic Village’ effect.
