A probe into the death of a two-year-old toddler has raised questions over a major children’s hospital's failure to return a panicked mother’s call for more than eight hours.
Callie’s mother Natalia Griffiths-I’Anson knew something “wasn’t right” when her daughter could not keep her eyes open, hours after returning home from a major surgery to her esophagus.She called the RCH about 10pm on 11 January 2018 to ask for urgent medical advice and was advised that a surgeon would call her right back, but the call never came.
Once he finished at 1am, he thought it was too late to call and instead intended to follow up the next morning.The inquest findings detail how they awoke at 6am to the sounds of Callie’s gurgling but as they tried to sit her up, she was limp and had stopped breathing. Callie had initially been admitted to hospital in December 2017 after ingesting cleaning liquid, while her mum left her in the care of some colleagues at the Oaklands Hotel as she paid bills nearby.
The inquest concluded that the two-year-old suffered from “perforation of her esophagus during or as a result of the procedure that led to her death about 24 hours later”.
