Australia has missed the chance to take part in a gold medal match after losing 1-0 to Sweden in the semi-final of the Tokyo Olympics:
While the Matildas will bemoan a highly contentious decision to disallow them a goal in the first half, they were the second best on the balance of play. Sweden were organised, disciplined, calm and clinical. They’ve been the best team throughout this tournament and are now just one win away from claiming gold when they face Canada in the final on Friday August 6.
A minute later, Sweden missed an open goal. Fridolina Rolfo’s cut back to Blackstenius looked to lead to a certain goal to seal the win for Sweden but somehow Blackstenius fired over the bar when scoring looked easier.87th min: Sweden 1-0 Australia She’s far from the only one struggling to deliver the right ball but with each wayward pass, Australia’s frustration is growing and Sam Kerr becomes increasingly isolated. Those three changes by the Matildas have already made a positive impact, bringing some much needed energy. In particular, Mary Fowler is looking bright. A shot on the turn curls across the face of goal, showing a sign of promise for the Matildas as they search for an equaliser.
