Australia are unbeaten in the men’s hockey after another goal spree took the Kookaburras to a 5-2 victory against Argentina.

Despite falling behind to a penalty corner conversion by Jose Tolini in the fourth minute, Australia took control of possession and the match and were level at quarter-time courtesy of Blake Govers, who himself put away a penalty corner. The Kookaburras struggled in the slow conditions because of a sodden pitch in the first period but as it dried, Australia were able to play their up-tempo game and picked apart the Argentine defence. It’s a style that few teams in the world can match.

Australia made the most of their second-quarter dominance with Tom Wickham and Lachie Sharp scoring from the field. But it was the efficiency of the penalty corner battery that was most pleasing. Every corner series resulted in a goal as Govers made it another double in the second quarter. When he was off for their fifth penalty corner, Jeremy Hayward put his name on the scoresheet with a powerful drag flick in the third.

The Kookaburras have scored 17 goals in their three wins and they face New Zealand tomorrow night, where a win or draw would secure them the top seed from pool B into the quarter-finals.
