After heatwaves, drought and flash floods, BBC weatherman Schafernaker tells Emily Cope what lies ahead ⤵️
,” explains Schafernaker, 43. “Before then it was more of an arbitrary term, and people are often surprised to hear that heatwaves are completely normal. They have been happening for centuries, and they will continue to happen, but with climate change they are getting more and more extreme.
“A few degrees Celsius may not seem like a lot, but it has a huge impact on the ecosystem and nature. It’s a delicate balance, like when we have a fever and our temperature rises by just a few degrees and we are bedbound. “Heat is energy and it has to go somewhere,” says Schafernaker. “When that heat rises, it’s like a hot air balloon which creates storm clouds, followed by thunderstorms and rain. These clouds may only be a few miles long, but if you are underneath them then you are going to get soaked. On some occasions, we can see up to one month’s worth of rain in just an hour.
“If this dry spell continues into autumn then it could feel especially cold, since there will be no cloud cover. People tend to think the colder winters bring snow, but that’s not the case. Often the coldest winters are more clear and crisp.”
