Most people going Texan on Friday will don cowboy hats, boots and jeans, or what singer James McMurtry calls “.” The cattle-drive era, though, lasted less than 30 years in Texas, and while the cattle-driving business made a few people wealthy, it didn’t contribute much to the state’s economy or employment.. Enslaved labor, and later oppressed labor under Jim Crow laws, was critical to growing cotton profitably.
