A two-storey home has been approved to replace a demolished bungalow in a residential road.

The proposal for a new house to be built in Toms Lane, between Kings Langley and Bedmond, made to Three Rivers District Council in February, was approved on Wednesday .

It follows a complicated planning history since permission was initially granted to add an additional storey and rear extension to the bungalow in 2022.When that building work began, the council decided that the amount of the original building involved went “well beyond” what had been permitted and in effect consisted of the “substantial demolition” of the bungalow.

Construction was put on hold and another planning application was made, part retrospectively, for permission to demolish the building and build a replacement bungalow with accommodation in the roof. This was approved in December, despite Abbots Langley Parish Council objecting that it appeared to be a “contrived scheme” not in character with the street. After the most recent scheme for a two-storey home was proposed, the parish council’s comment said: “Members acknowledge the previous approved applications for this site and feel this proposal is more in keeping with the street scene than the previously approved scheme.
