One man, who survived the shooting while working at the Port Arthur historic site on 28 April 1996 and was one of more than 50 to receive a bravery award, said the comparison – even with Dutton’s clarification – was “tone deaf”. “Using this as a political point is actually taking a narrative away from survivors and their families. He’s actually taking away our story.”
