Under-fire Channel 9 journalist Tony Jones has claimed he apologised to Novak Djokovic and his “camp” 48 hours ago for his disrespectful chanting towards Serbian tennis fans at Melbourne Park. Djokovic refused to do an on-court interview after his fourth-round win at the Australian Open on Sunday night and later declared he would boycott Nine until he received a public apology from Jones and the network. In his first statement since the incident, Jones said he had already apologised in private.
“And since then, he chose not to issue any public apology. Neither did Channel 9. “So, since they’re official broadcasters, I chose not to give interviews for Channel 9. “I have to stand by my decision and hold this stance until something is done, so I’ll leave it to Channel 9 and hopefully that situation will change for the next match.” In his response, Jones said he thought he was joking with fans. “Now, I should also say the disrespect was extended, in many ways, to the Serbian fans.
