Emergency services have warned more than 50 properties are at risk from the twin blazes in the Wimmera.

Residents of two rural towns in far western Victoria have been warned about two dangerous bushfires which are threatening more than 50 properties near the South Australian border.

A media spokeswoman from the State Control Centre said the fire near Casterton-Edehnhope Road is currently five kilometres south-west of the locality, but is “moving pretty quickly” and would likely increase in size.“This fire is threatening homes and lives.... You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive,” VicEmergency said in an emergency warning.“You must take shelter before the fire arrives. The extreme heat is likely to kill you well before the flames reach you.

Those who cannot shelter indoors were told to venture to the middle of a large open area, like a ploughed paddock or sporting reserve, or get into a large body of water like a dam, lake, river or in-ground pool. The nearby town of Powers Creek is also under significant threat from a bushfire, with a 115 hectare blaze threatening around 24 properties.
