Derryn Hinch's Justice Party says the law in its current form is not working and needs to be reviewed by parliament now.
Victorian MPs have been asked to "urgently" review the state's assisted dying laws in the wake of headlines about a court freeing a man who gave in to his elderly and terminally ill father's pleas to help him end his life. The Victorian government says it will wait for the Minister for Health's review in 2024
The state's two big political parties — Labor and the Liberal-National coalition — say they will wait for the Minister for Health or independent reviews to see whether the law needs to change. "To have a lot of people who are unable to access the scheme for whatever reasons perhaps indicates there are too many safeguards in place, too many steps that a person must take to access the voluntary assisted dying scheme, too many hurdles for them to overcome," he said. "And that's just something nobody could ever imagine what that would be like to go through, and no-one should ever have to go through that as a family or individual."Colin Stratton and his wife Suzanne became members of the Dying with Dignity party after Suzanne's first stroke in 2007. Mrs Stratton died a decade later of a brain haemorrhage.
The assisted dying scheme, introduced in mid-2019, requires the patient to be terminally ill and a diagnosis by two doctors that they are likely to die within the next six months or 12 months if they have a neurodegenerative disease. The state-wide Care Navigator Service and the state-wide Pharmacy Service have been expanded to improve access and provide more support for patients and families through the voluntary assisted dying process.
