Anyone near the lake over the next few days may hear loud steam whistles as steamboat enthusiasts tour the waters in a nod to the 19th century.

Colt Stewart, of Massachusetts, and Glenn Papp, of Pennsylvania, will be spending five days, starting Friday, exploring New Jersey’s largest lake side by side on their steamboats.

“I’ve had people come up and say, ‘I thought you were on fire,’ and then it turns out it’s just a steamboat,” said Papp, 34, a Bridgewater native who describes himself as the caretaker of the 21-foot long boat his family bought in October 2021. The 4-square-mile lake — located on the border of Sussex and Morris counties — is the largest in New Jersey and a popular spot for boating. But, steam-powered boats rarely grace its shores these days.

Stewart, 27, built his 16-foot-long boat — the S.L. Mockingbird — from scratch starting in 2015. He said it took more than a year and cost nearly $8,000 to construct. S.L. is the abbreviation for “steam launch.” “Seldom have I met anyone who didn’t love it. There have been one or two curmudgeons who didn’t like the loud whistle,” Papp said.

Papp met Stewart in 2018 at a railroad event in New Hampshire that involved their shared interest in steam locomotives.
