Mid-sized SUV s have long been Australia's most popular new-vehicle type, last year chalking up over 80,000 more sales than the next biggest market segment, 4×4 utes. SUV s in general found a total of 704,557 new homes in 2024, for a market share of 56.9 per cent, with mid-sized SUV s accounting for the biggest portion of them with 287,637 sales. That sub-category alone enjoyed a year-on-year sales increase of 7.

2 per cent compared to 2023, making it one of the fastest-growing segments, while 4×4 ute and large SUV sales declined. With that in mind, we’ve taken to the VFACTS sales charts to break down the top five best-selling mid-sized SUVs of 2024.Our previous VFACTS coverage identified the segment-toppers, but this list is intended to provide a slightly more detailed analysis for those considering such a vehicle. Toyota RAV4 Ranking second overall behind the Ford Ranger, the Toyota RAV4 notched up an exceptionally strong year on the Australian sales charts in 2024, when it chalked up 58,718 deliveries. Compared to 2023 it experienced a sales increase of 98.2 per cent, helping it to overtake the evergreen HiLux ute to become Toyota’s best-selling vehicle for the first time ever, as well as Australia’s and Toyota’s best-selling SUV (and of course mid-sized SUV). The fifth-generation RAV4 range, launched in May 2019, is powered exclusively by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain comprising a CVT automatic transmission, with either front- or all-wheel drive layouts and claimed fuel economy ranging between 4.7L/100km and 4.8L/100km. Available in nine variants, The RAV4 ranges in price from $42,260 to $58,360 before on-road costs. All variants come with a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on testing conducted in 2019, and are backed by Toyota’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Our highest-scoring RAV4 variant last year was the range-topping Edge Hybrid, which was awarded 8.3/10 by Jack Quick in August. As the second best-selling model in the mid-sized SUV category, the Outlander is also among the most configurable. With prices between $37,740 and $73,790 before on-roads, you can purchase it as a five-seater or seven-seater, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power. Non-hybrid models are fitted with a 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder engine, while the 2.4-litre four-cylinder PHEV powertrain offers boosted outputs and better fuel-efficiency. All powertrains send power to the wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The range is covered by Mitsubishi’s conditional 10-year, 200,000km warranty, while the PHEV models are covered for eight years or 160,000km. The fourth-generation Outlander was launched here in November 2021 and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on testing conducted in 2022. Topping CarExpert’s 2024 Outlander ratings was the Exceed Tourer, which sits one rung below the GSR PHEV at the top of the range. It was awarded 8.2/10 by James Wong in July. Three four-cylinder petrol engines are available across the eight-grade CX-5 range: 2.0- and 2.5-litre naturally aspirated, and 2.5-litre turbocharged. The each engine has more power than the last, though that comes at the cost of fuel-efficiency. Both 2.5-litre engines can be optioned with all-wheel drive, while the 2.0-litre is reserved for the base-spec CX-5 and is only available in front-wheel drive. All variants utilise a six-speed automatic transmission, while the range varies in price from $36,590 to $55,000 before on-road costs. Mazda backs its CX-5 with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, though it remains without an ANCAP safety score after its rating lapsed at the end of 202
