The Albanese government needs to appoint new military commanders before their term expires in thee weeks.

Military chiefs remain in the dark over who will preside over the Defence Force and its three branches, with little indication the Albanese government is moving to appoint new commanders despite senior leadership positions being spilled in three weeks.

But senior government and military sources said it was unknown when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles would name replacements. Vice Admiral Johnston was appointed vice chief four years ago and before that was chief of joint operations, a role in which he oversaw Australia’s contribution to defeating Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

While there are suggestions Lt-Gen Frewen’s role meant he may be too closely associated with the former government, there is recognition he was just doing his job and he is seen as one of the military’s most effective leaders. At a time China is trying to grow its influence in the South Pacific, Lt-Gen Frewen also has strong ties to the region.
