Top congressional Republicans tour border as pressure builds for Biden to keep Title 42

The group, which also includes GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., is meeting with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Army National Guard in the Del Rio sector. Republicans are hoping to keep the border, where border patrol last month reported the most encounters with migrants in two decades, front and center heading into the midterm elections this fall.
“If we’d just secure our border and do our job we wouldn’t have this loss of life,” Roy said in a video he tweeted Monday morning. “This administration refuses to. Our job is to hold them accountable.” The tour is being led by U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales of San Antonio. Rep. Randy Weber of Friendswood is also expected to join, as is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a conservative firebrand from Georgia.
The trip is meant to keep attention on the upcoming end of Title 42, a health order the Trump administration issued in 2020, arguing that it was necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky this month determined that the order was no longer necessary, given lower infection numbers and the increased availability of COVID vaccines and therapeutics.
