She has been a trusted adviser to both sides of politics in a near 40-year career, as chief of staff to Labor foreign affairs and defence minister Stephen Smith and later as international adviser to Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister.
Frances Adamson, the secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, during a Senate Estimates hearing this year.“This award is an acknowledgment of the vital role our department plays in protecting Australia’s interests,” she said. “I dedicate the award to DFAT staff the world over, whose service to Australians has been my inspiration.
An Adelaide University-educated economist, Ms Adamson has been at the forefront of Australia-China relations for three decades as an eyewitness to China’s transformation from an inward-looking, economically stunted sleeping giant into the industrialised, forceful and outwardly assertive form it has now adopted.
