They say such a scheme, which was proposed by NSW Treasurer Matt Kean ahead of next week’s jobs summit, would be an “immediate” way to ease skills shortages.
, warning it would see a return to the worst exploitation of skilled visa workers.
“We’re at a point where we’re at an acute skill shortage and we need to respond to that ... I think having a less prescriptive view of skills – there’s a lot of red tape at the moment – is a good thing,” said Darren Perry, the managing partner of one of Australia’s top employment outfits, Seyfarth Shaw.
“There needs [to be] a bit of thought on how that comes together, and making sure there are some safeguards around it, but I don’t think we need a new visa subclass, we can do it within the same [skilled migration] framework.” “Given those constraints, I’d [have] thought this would be the time to trial a lower skilled migration scheme. Don’t make it permanent, but maybe for the next two years.”While the three lawyers acknowledged there could be an exploitation risk with such visas, they said that existing worker protections should, if adequately enforced, ensure visa holders were treated properly.
