Opinion: Why John Barilaro’s the perfect choice to be our man in New York
Now that we have a new national mood and there are no more climate wars, culture wars, or any wars except for real ones, it is a good time to climb out of our entrenchments and imagine ourselves seeing things from the other side. Empathy with an opposing point of view is supposed to be therapeutic, and it exercises the other half of the brain.
Former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro has been appointed to the plum role of US trade commissioner.Barilaro’s first qualification is obvious. The job requires salesmanship, imagination and chutzpah. A person who has imagined this job into being as trade minister, quit politics, applied for the job when it seemed unable to be filled, only to be given the job months later – what can be said for such ability?
