Latest data from the Office of Local Government NSW shows the highest-earning council general manager s get paid more than $500,000 annually.
The highest-earning general managers of local governments make more money than the premier, whose annual package is worth $416,440. The remuneration figure was somewhat inflated because it included a termination payment to its general manager Michael Urquhart, and the leave he cashed out upon his exit from the role in March 2023.This was a particularly expensive year for the Western Sydney council's ratepayers because it employed three general managers during the period.
There was a better indication of how much CEOs and general managers earned at councils ranked six to 10 because each role was held by a singular person for the entire period. Ms Turley said the state's 128 councils employed 55,000 people and were responsible for $198 billion in public assets.Ms Turley pointed out that Central Darling Shire Council, the state's largest, was almost twice the size of Belgium.
