The headmaster of St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill offered “heartfelt apology” by memorial at the school gates.
St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, which harboured eight convicted paedophiles and 11 more who face credible allegations of sexual abuse, dedicated a memorial to the victims on Sunday.
“Families trusted this place to care for their son and nurture him through adolescence. Boys came here in their innocence to enjoy life, grow in their faith and learning. Sadly, that trust and innocence was betrayed. Terrible things happened here at this place, which should have protected those boys.”
An abuse survivor, Andrew Phelan, graduated from St Joseph’s College in 1971 and was instrumental in developing the plan for the memorial, which sits in a prominent position just inside the school’s main gates.Photographs from the school’s “hall of fame” have had images and names of sexual abusers removed.“We’re standing here in front of a multimillion dollar aquatic facility, so it’s perhaps surprising that this memorial was funded by donations,” Phelan said.
