Top teachers should have a 50 per cent pay rise, expert says | JordsBaker pallavisinghal_
Teachers' salaries have fallen behind the average professional wage over the past 30 years, and at the peak of their career teachers earn less than electricians, chiropractors and publicists.
Teachers also had a flat career structure, leaving them with little scope for advancement unless they took a principal's position, said Professor Buchanan, who will give evidence to the NSW Teachers Federation inquiry into teachers' pay and conditions on Thursday. "I think that's part of the [reason that] a lot of people are leaving the profession within the first five years. They figure out that it's incredibly demanding work, and the prospects for advancement are limited.
NSW does have a certification for highly accomplished or lead teachers, but the pay rise is insignificant, Professor Buchanan said. A Grattan Institute report also found the application process was long and bureaucratic, and the certification was not widely respected. Dr Sonnemann said suggestions that teachers should receive performance pay in the form of a bonus was not an answer.
