Dozens of children have been rescued from a mangled sports centre after a tornado ripped through Bunbury, 150km south of Perth, on Friday afternoon. Police and ambulances rushed to the Bunbury Police and Community Youth Centre where up to 50 children had been playing when the severe weather event carved through, causing a partial collapse, about 4pm.
Dozens of kids rescued from sports centre torn apart by tornado. 7NEWS was told all children inside the centre escaped injury, but a woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The damage around the surrounding area was clear too, with trees toppled, fences torn down and rooves ripped away. More than 25 homes are believed to have sustained damage and more than 50 calls were made to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for help.
