The upcoming national athletics championships in Australia will feature the toughest race in the country since 2000, with a deep field of competitors in the women's 800m, men's 800m, and women's and men's 1500m. Qualifying times alone are not enough to secure a spot on the Olympic team, making the national title at the championships critical for athletes.
It will be the toughest race against the deepest field Australia has seen since 2000, possibly ever.The women’s 800m might be the most keenly foughtrace we have ever staged in Australia outside an Olympics or Commonwealth Games.That would be remarkable enough but the same might also be said of the men’s 800m, and the women’s and men’s 1500m.
A national title at the championships in Adelaide from Friday will be critical in claiming a place on the team.There are five women who have run under two minutes for the 800m but room for only three. “From what I have seen in the women’s 800m it’s Abbey or Claudia , Bendere is capable and Bisset has a proven capability.
Likewise Stewart McSweyn’s run in the mile in Melbourne has shown he has hit form after injury-affected recent years.
