Anyone caught behind in the peloton has long since given up on the idea of competing for the stage win. It was a destructive attack by the world champion, Balsamo, that created the initial gap and the six riders up front have been utterly dominant in their wish to compete for the win.
Alana Castrique of Cofidis, who crashed heavily on yesterday’s stage in Paris, abandoned the race as a result.
