The NSW government is urging other states to reconsider travel testing rules as COVID-19 swab turnaround times blow out, clinics are stretched and infections hit record highs.
The state government will also engage with their Queensland counterparts about whether rapid antigen tests could be used in lieu of PCR tests ahead of interstate travel, to lighten the load on testing clinics. Mr Hazzard said one of the biggest challenges for the healthcare system would be the impact of the virus spread on staffing levels, with 1400 healthcare workers now unable to work after contracting COVID-19 or being forced to isolate.
A spokesperson for rapid test supplier Roche said orders have doubled in the past week, with 250,000 placed on Monday and up to three million in warehouses.
