Summer holiday destinations are now targeting the hearts and wallets of winter travellers in an effort to create a more sustainable tourism model.

There are a few months every year when Lucky Bay , a short drive from Esperance on Western Australia's rugged south coast, is buzzing with visitors from across the country and abroad."It's beautiful."

"You try and make the best possible experience you can for those that visit and also the people that live here in those summer months," he said. Mr Metz said he hoped it would lead to a more sustainable tourism model for the nature-rich but isolated community.For many years, the iconic Esperance image has been of a kangaroo standing before the crystal blue water at Lucky Bay.

A new hiking festival will be launched next month, coinciding with the beginning of wildflower season, while back in June, the inaugural"So we are trying to promote those off seasons, because that's what's currently available," she said.But Esperance is far from alone in its bid to promote off-peak visitation.For the past eight years, Margaret River's Cabin Fever festival has provided a mid-winter boost to the local economy.

With its world-famous reef and rainforest — and an international airport to boot — Cairns has been a popular winter getaway destination for decades.
