A tourist has been rescued after being left 'unable to walk' following a failed attempt to climb one of Australia's most famous mountains barefoot.

The 22-year-old man, who is travelling in Tasmania from interstate, is understood to have set off to climb Cradle Mountain without footwear on Saturday morning. Tasmania Police said he called emergency services about 7.30am seeking assistance after suffering from frostbite, with temperatures at the time below zero degrees.

Picture: Getty Images Emergency services rendered assistance to the tourist,"which included the provision of footwear", the police statement said.Police said the rescue served as a reminder to walkers descending on Cradle Mountain to ensure they are adequately prepared before setting off to explore the popular nature spot. "Sergeant Jeremy Williams would like to remind walkers of the need to be properly prepared with equipment and experience when venturing into the wilderness.
