Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney has been elected the new deputy mayor of Townsville at a special meeting held today and she will act as mayor while Troy Thompson remains suspended by the state government.

"It's embarrassing for the residents to feel they have a council that is not functioning," Marr said.But Greaney promised next year will bring stability to Townsville.Greaney will be paid the deputy mayor's salary during her time at the helm.Former deputy mayor Jacob had taken over the role after then-mayor Troy Thompson was suspended in November amid an ongoing corruption probe.Townsville mayor Troy Thompson remains suspended by the Queensland government.
His suspension followed a months-long deadlock, which included a motion of no confidence from councillors and attempts by the former government to force his removal.She brings 20 years of local government experience to the role and was elected to council in 2016.
