A new study revealed more than half of LGBTQ young people in community sport have witnessed some form of homo/bi/transphobia, while 40 per cent reported first-hand experiences of being discriminated against.

Young people are turning away from community sport, and grassroots clubs report that many LGBTQ players do not feel safe being publicly out, because of the prevalence of homophobia and discrimination at all levels.

The Swinburne report revealed LGBTQ young people’s participation in sport was around 30 per cent, about half of that of their non-LGBTQ peers.This masthead canvassed presidents and players from six community sporting clubs across Victoria, on the condition of anonymity to avoid inadvertently outing players.

“They will slip up along the way, and I’ll have this awkward interaction … they know they’ve said something, and then they’ll apologise, and I find it uncomfortable, they’re uncomfortable, but by doing that, they learn a little bit more about me,” Brennan said.
