Australia's automotive landscape has shifted dramatically, with Toyota holding the top spot for registered vehicles, Hyundai surging past Holden, and Ford experiencing a decline.
Australia’s automotive landscape has undergone significant changes in the past decade, with the closure of local manufacturing leading to a decline for some popular brands. The Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) released its annual Dealernomics report this week, outlining key car industry statistics as 2025 begins. This report includes a Top 10 list of the brands with the most vehicles on Australian roads, revealing a notable shift in rankings.
According to data from the Department of Infrastructure published by the AADA, the number of vehicles registered in Australia at the start of 2024 reached 20.4 million, an increase of approximately 600,000 from 2023. This figure excludes the record 1,237,287 vehicle deliveries made in 2024 and the unknown number of unregistered vehicles during that year.It is unsurprising that Toyota vehicles hold the top spot for registered vehicles in Australia, given the brand’s longstanding dominance, having been the best-seller for the past 22 years consecutively. Starting in 2024, there were 3.16 million Toyotas registered in Australia, a rise of approximately 60,000 vehicles compared to the previous year. Toyota delivered a record 241,296 new vehicles to buyers across the country in 2024, undoubtedly contributing to the increase in its overall registrations. Trailing behind is Mazda, with 1.51 million vehicles registered in Australia, an increase of roughly 50,000 vehicles from 2023. Last year, Mazda delivered 95,987 vehicles. The most significant change occurred in the third position, with Hyundai’s registrations surging to 1.28 million vehicles, mirroring the figure of former Australian carmaker Holden. Holden ceased car production in Australia in October 2017, and the brand was officially wound down by General Motors on January 1, 2021. Although a handful of remaining vehicles were sold in the following months, the brand has been absent from the Australian market for four years. While Hyundai saw a year-on-year increase of approximately 30,000 registrations, Holden’s figure declined by roughly 90,000 vehicles, a trend that will likely continue. Nevertheless, Holden still holds a slight lead over Ford, which experienced a decrease in registered vehicles from approximately 940,200 to 900,500. Ford delivered 100,170 vehicles in 2024. Alongside long-time rival Holden and Honda, Ford was one of three brands that saw more vehicles unregistered than delivered. Following the Blue Oval brand were more Japanese marques: Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Honda, while Kia rounded out the top 10. Kia recently surpassed Hyundai in the annual new-car sales competition; however, it still possesses only around half the number of registered vehicles overall in Australia. This is partly due to Hyundai starting car sales here in 1986, while Kia entered the local market a decade later
