Trade Minister Don Farrell will attempt to restore Australia's relationship with its largest trading partner - but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has flagged China must drop the sanctions slapped on his country to successfully reignite the ties.
Senator Farrell, who is travelling to Geneva for the World Trade Organization's 12th Ministerial Conference, told“China is our largest trading partner. If Senator Farrell locks in the gathering with his counterpart, it will mark the first senior-level meeting between Australian and Chinese officials since the diplomatic freeze. “We will work to achieve outcomes that support governments dealing with the challenges posed by COVID-19 and Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine,” he added.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who seized the top job three weeks ago, has indicated the Australian-Chinese relationship would not be repaired until Beijing removed the trade sanctions.
