For the first time, some elders on Palm Island have had the chance to perform songs to the community as part of a project involving three generations.
On the foreshore of the Indigenous community of Palm Island , locals gathered for a sunset concert — the premiere performance of theThe project brought together three generations of the same family group to write and perform three songs about connection to country , creation and Palm Island er identity.
In the early 20th century, people from more than 40 different tribes from around Queensland were forcibly settled on the island under government acts which stripped away their rights."The beauty of projects like this is that there is new people that learn more about the beauty of the culture, how strong the culture actually is here and how beautiful the community is," Ms Briscoe said.
"It is amazing. It means so much. It makes you feel full, full with the power of your people and the spirit," he said. Teenager Nashae Bulsey says he started rapping for fun and didn't think he'd have the chance to perform on stage."I felt confident. I didn't feel ashamed. It just came to me." "At first it was nerve wracking, then I was like 'no, no we all family, we all come together and we all come here to be part of this'," Ms Mabo said.
"That is a very powerful point of contact because grandmothers hold a lot of stories, grandmothers bear the children, grandmothers are the ones to nurture communities," she said.
