The number of visits is down from a pandemic peak of more than 4.1 million in March 2021. But City Harvest suspects the Every borough has seen visits to food pantries and soup kitchens go up during the pandemic, but not all have been affected equally. Queens saw the biggest leap in demand, according to City Harvest. The borough’s pantries and soup kitchens had more than 1 million monthly visits, on average, during the first six months of this year — an increase of 139% from the first half of 2019.

A significant share of the New Yorkers who rely on these supplementary food sources are children. Food pantries and soup kitchens served children 580,140 times this June, a 75% increase from June 2019.themselves, making it harder for some to procure the same amount of inventory they once did.
