Melbourne has been disrupted by pro-Palestine protests on Monday morning, from the docks to Hoddle and Flinders streets.
In Port Melbourne, near Boeing’s Melbourne office, about half a dozen protestors were arrested and four others who were chained on the road were removed, blocking a major city route. The road has now reopened.Chris Hopkins
However, police conceded on Sunday afternoon that they still did not know the specific locations and nature of the planned blockades. Some 24-hour police stations will be temporarily closed as the force relocates officers to central Melbourne. Several specialist teams will also be deployed, including the mounted branch, public order response team, highway patrol and transit police.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the force was braced for a wave of protest activity but conceded it was unaware of the locations or nature of the blockades. “As we have seen during recent disruptive protests, it is too often innocent people caught up and unfairly impacted. Blocking thoroughfares delays the vital work of emergency services responding to critical incidents and prevents people from getting to work,” the spokeswoman said.“Necessary steps are being taken ahead of the A15 campaign, including additional security resources and increased security patrols.
