When Cathy Wills came to the small Tasmanian town of Gladstone, nothing much ever happened. That was until she revamped the local pub.
A former tin mining town in Tasmania 's north-east is livelier again after the redevelopment of its pub and the creation of new community events by the pub's owners.
Ms Willis said that despite not having worked in hospitality, the decision to take on running the Gladstone Hotel was not daunting.Long-time local resident Clancy Clifford said both the pub and the town of Gladstone were quiet before the husband-and-wife duo arrived. The couple has also built a cafe in the pub and, thanks to Ms Groves and local Year 12 student Luke Ilot, added a display of historic photos of Gladstone to its walls.They have also introduced three fundraising events to the Gladstone calendar: a woodchop, a buggy ride and a rodeo."That's probably the biggest event ever held in Gladstone.
"About four or five locals in the town nominated me … so that was really great, very overwhelming," she said. And she is not stopping there, having recently purchased another pub to overhaul — this one in the small Tasmanian town of Branxholm, about 40 minutes drive south-west.In her nomination for Citizen of the Year, residents said Cathy Wills "has given our town a sense of belonging".
