A woman killed in a golf buggy crash on Queensland’s Hamilton Island was on her honeymoon, and her husband of three days was driving the vehicle at the time. 7NEWS
A paramedic stationed on the island - plus first aiders including an off-duty dentist, an off-duty fire officer and a doctor - had tried to revive for her 35 minutes, to no avail.The woman’s husband was performing a U-turn when the buggy rolled.It’s uncertain why the buggy rolled, but police believe the man was turning it around “to go back and charge” its battery.
“Whilst turning around, the golf buggy’s turned on its side,” said Inspector Anthony Cowan said on Tuesday.Alcohol is not believed to have played a part in the crash, Cowan said.However he confirmed the woman was not wearing a seatbelt.“It appears there’s been no seatbelt worn, at this point in time,” he said.“It’s a tragic accident.
“I could only imagine how the driver is feeling, when you’re on your honeymoon and your partner’s now deceased.”Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Graeme McIntyre said the paramedic who responded was one of two living on the island. After the woman was declared dead, the paramedic had to stay with her body and her husband until police arrived.
“In this instance, we have to wait with the deceased person until police are able to collect the person,” McIntyre said.“So it is quite confronting emotionally for a paramedic involved.”
