Mick Whelan, Aslef’s general secretary, accused ministers of spreading “malicious lies” about the pay offer that has been made by the Rail Delivery Group, which represents the 14 major train operators. According to insiders, Aslef felt undermined by the Government’s decision to announce to the public that it had offered a 4 per cent pay rise for 2023 as well as for one in 2022, when the terms had not been agreed.

Privately, ministers are incensed by the union’s stance, and believe the public’s mood is unlikely to remain supportive of the industrial action.
