Trams are set to begin their first journeys through Surry Hills to Central Station in Sydney's CBD on Tuesday night, in a significant sign of progress for the city's troubled light rail project.

Under the original timeframe, Premier Gladys Berejiklian was meant to cut the ribbon in March. But the Spanish construction company building the line, Acciona, warned last October that theWith tram testing extended to Central Station, Ms Prendergast urged motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to take greater care, especially of the light rail vehicles and live overhead power lines.

The recruitment of up to 100 drivers will gather pace later this year. So far, tram operator Transdev has hired eight drivers, four of whom are involved in the testing.Thirty-one of the 60 trams due to be delivered are at a stabling yard next to Randwick Racecourse.
