Tasmanian mothers have been speaking out on their birth experiences as part of a parliamentary inquiry investigating maternity services in the state.

A submission to the inquiry from the Australasian Birth Trauma Association estimated about 770 Tasmanian women experienced birth trauma annually. The stories will inform a parliamentary inquiry investigating maternity services in the state.

Claire said she suffered a birth injury that caused scar tissue forming in the uterus and/or cervix, ongoing pelvic pain and permanent infertility.Emma said her birth at a regional hospital left her baby with paralysis of the arm while she suffered a third-degree perineal tear, pelvic floor damage, urinary incontinence and ongoing mental health impacts. The ALA said these women have all taken legal action.

"If that advice is not properly given, then the patient can't make a properly informed choice and it is a significant duty owed by medical professionals to patients.Ms Davies said people sometimes accepted birth trauma without realising they could take legal action or seek further explanation for what has occurred.

"If they are educated in the lead-up to the birth and the labour, that's going to be a much better outcome for them." "But that's because it's deemed to be in the best interest physically, psychologically, but particularly physically for the care of the mother and the baby. "That's the sort of evidence that a parliamentary committee can take into account and help inform the government and public policy in this area."
