Travellers could face major delays on Friday after more than 500 Qantas engineers went on strike as part of an ongoing dispute over pay and work conditions.

Travellers could face major delays as more than 500 Qantas workers stage walk off on one of airline's busiest days

The strike comes on what is one of the airline's busiest days of the year, as schools across the country break for summer and families look to head interstate or abroad on holiday. In a statement, the airline attempted to reassure customers worried about the potential for delays, saying they had"additional aircraft and crew on standby" to ensure travellers enjoyed a smooth journey.

Sydney and Melbourne airport operators have also said they do not yet anticipate any major disruption as a result of the strike. "Workers were asked by Qantas in good faith to not take industrial action as a commitment to resolve bargaining," he said.
