Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says he's 'not in a position' to say whether a budget surplus can still be achieved.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says he's "not in a position" to say whether a budget surplus can still be achieved. Speaking to reporters on Monday about the government’s small business package for bushfire victims, the treasurer said the full impact the blazes will have on the economy won’t be known for some time.

“I'm not in a position to give a firm answer to that question because the full economic impact is still uncertain,” Mr Frydenberg said. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said tougher economic conditions had already lowered the budget estimate. “In the mid-year economic review that promise went from $7 billion to $5 billion,” he said.
