Australia’s Children’s Commissioner wants the federal government to show leadership in elevating child wellbeing as a policy priority | katinacurtis
The woman charged with looking out for all children in Australia wants the federal cabinet to prioritise the nation’s youngest in its policymaking, as it has done for women’s safety.
Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds says it’s a problem there’s no national standard for what children need to have the best start in life.“It’s quite hard to get action to invest in prevention. We’re still having to pay for the ambulances at the bottom of the cliff, as we call them, the services that are picking up the pieces,” she said.
Ms Hollonds points to the way domestic violence and women’s safety has been elevated in policymaking over recent years as a model for getting action at the federal level and also allowing different governments and portfolios to work together.
