NFC West division rivals will once again have a brutal schedule in 2022.
Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers huddles with the offense on the field before the game against the Green Bay Packers. The NFL released the 2022 regular season opponents for all 32 teams on Monday, a potenttial palate cleanser for San Francisco 49ers fans after their squad lost in the NFC title game.
But if Niners fans were hoping for a reprieve from the difficulties of last season, they aren't going to be happy with the upcoming slate of matchups: San Francisco has thebased on opponent records from last year at 154-135-0. Ahead of the 49ers are the No. 4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers , No. 3 Cincinnati Bengals , No. 2 Arizona Cardinals and No. 1 Los Angeles Rams .
It’s of course worth noting that the aforementioned records come with many caveats. Plenty of teams throughout the NFL have gone through coaching and front office changes, seen notable players retire, and have dealt with myriad injuries that greatly affected how last season played out. Even the Niners, for example, are most likely moving on from an experienced, albeit controversial, man under center to a rising sophomore who has just two professional starts under his belt .
This is to say you can react to the 49ers' schedule with existential dread, or with optimism that a new season brings new possibilities. Who knows? The Niners could repeat their late season, and postseason, heroics with a more dynamic quarterback! Last year’s full schedule, which listed week-by-week matchups, was not released until May 18, so expect a similar drop date for this upcoming season.Home
